Who we are
CompareHQ is operated by CompareHQ Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17383112), with its registered office at 33 Smithies Lane, Barnsley, England, S71 1RD. We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy.
What data we collect
CompareHQ works without an account. If you don't create one, a small amount of data is stored locally in your browser (using “localStorage”), and is never sent to our servers:
- Saved providers, the list of providers you've saved for later.
- Compare selection, the providers you've chosen to compare side by side.
- Recent searches, up to your last 5 search terms, so you can quickly find them again. You can clear these at any time from the search box.
None of this locally-stored data identifies you personally, and it stays on your device, clearing your browser data removes it.
If you create an account
Creating a CompareHQ account lets your saved providers follow you across devices instead of living only in one browser. When you sign up, we collect your email address, full name, and password (which we never see in plain text, only Supabase, our database provider, handles it securely), plus any of the following you choose to give us: phone number, job title, company, and company size. Your saved providers are then stored against your account instead of your browser.
We'll only email you about things other than your account (like new providers or features) if you tick the marketing consent box at sign-up, and you can withdraw that consent at any time by contacting us.
Cookies and analytics
We don't use advertising cookies. CompareHQ sets two strictly necessary first-party cookies: a session identifier that keeps provider ordering stable as you browse (present even if you're not signed in), and, if you sign in, a cookie from our authentication provider (Supabase) that keeps you signed in as you move between pages. If you agree to it in our cookie banner, we also set an analytics cookie from Microsoft Clarity, and, separately, one from Google Analytics. If you decline analytics cookies, neither is set. See our Cookie Policy for the full list, including how Clarity and Google Analytics work and how to change your choice.
We do record a small amount of first-party usage data directly in our own database (not via a cookie) to help us improve the service, for example which pages and provider profiles are viewed, what people search for, and how many enquiries are sent. This includes the text of search queries, which provider profiles are viewed, and an approximate location (country, region and town or city) that our hosting provider, Vercel, derives from your connection. We never store your IP address, and this location can't identify you. No persistent visitor identifier is created, and this data is never shared with or sold to third parties. If you're signed in and submit an enquiry, that enquiry is linked to your account in the same way your other account activity already is; anonymous browsing is not linked to any identity.
Separately, we use Vercel Web Analytics to understand overall site traffic. It doesn't use cookies or any other persistent identifier, it can't identify you individually, and any session data is automatically discarded after 24 hours.
If you agree to analytics cookies, we also use Microsoft Clarity to see how visitors use the site, page views, clicks, scrolling, and mouse movement, so we can identify and fix confusing parts of the site. Clarity only runs after you consent, and it doesn't collect what you type into form fields.
Third-party services
To display provider logos, CompareHQ requests favicon images from DuckDuckGo's icon service (icons.duckduckgo.com) based on each provider's website domain. This request happens directly from your browser when a page loads a provider logo.
We use Supabase to host our database and handle account sign-in, Resend to send emails (account emails, enquiry notifications, and marketing emails you've opted into), and, only if you agree to analytics cookies, Microsoft Clarity for on-site analytics. All three only process your data to provide these services to us and don't use it for their own purposes.
How long we keep your data
If you have an account, we keep your account data for as long as your account stays open. If you close your account or ask us to delete it, we'll delete your personal data within a reasonable period, except where we're required to keep records for legal or accounting reasons. Enquiries you send to providers are kept so both sides have a record of what was discussed, in the same way an email thread would be.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have rights over any personal data we hold about you, including the right to access, correct, or delete it. This covers both any account data described above and any information you send us directly, such as through our contact page. To request access to or deletion of your account data, email hello@comparehq.co.uk.
